PeLi Teas Tai Ping Hou Qui comes from Hou Keng area located in the mountainous region of Huang Shan of the Anhui province. The best Tai Ping Hou Qui is grown on one of three peaks: Shixingtou peak, Fenghuangjian peak or Nanshandeng peak, all with altitudes above 2,700 feet.  The mountains are covered by natural forests and moistened by a misty fog all year round.

The tea gardens are scattered in shady canyon areas and temperatures vary significantly between day and night, both of which are ideal for the Shi Da tea cultivar’s growing conditions. The tea is grown in soil rich of phyllite and granite providing excellent drainage and micro-element ingredients for the tea plants.  Orchids grow all year round in the Hou Keng area and the Hou Kui fresh tea leaves are plucked when the orchids are blooming, giving the tea its special fragrance and quality.

The Shi Da tea cultivar is used to produce Tai Ping Hou Kui green tea.  This quality cultivar has sparse branches, short joints and big fuzzy bright green leaves. The fresh tea leaves (one bud and two leaves), are plucked in the spring around April 20.  Our tea masters will choose fuzzy, straight and tender leaves of uniform size from healthy tea plants to make the tea.  Leaves that are too big, too small, too pale in color, or curled in shape will not be used to make the tea.  The leaves must always be accompanied by healthy buds.

Tai Ping Hou Kui is one of the highest quality handcrafted green teas. After withering, our skilled tea masters’ carefully bake the leaves to arrest oxidation.  They take the tea through multiple careful drying steps always maintaining the classic straight flat leaf shape. Proper processing of this tea only slightly changes the tea leaves fresh tender green color and original shape.
